The Church, The Parish Hall and The Pavilion
The Historic Praha Community established in 1842 was settled in the 1850s by Czech immigrants. It is located one mile west of Engle and three miles east of Flatonia in southern Fayette County. The community is affectionately called Matička Praha, Mother of the Painted Churches. The parish was the first Catholic parish between Houston and San Antonio with its 17 x 15 feet stone chapel built in 1865 and in 1881, the first Czech Catholic School in America. The community now features a stone church dedicated November 20, 1895.
The present day 113 x 70 feet Parish Hall, Pavilion and grounds is the venue to see and be seen on
August 15, Pražská Pout, the Feast Day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
